The Town of Brant has said no to a proposed 600-Acre landfill.
Town Supervisor Sam Chiavetta on Wednesday said the Town Board, meeting Thesday night, turned down the landfill proposal by Bob Gearhardt of Derby to develop property on the south side of Cain Road west of Route 20.
"We wanted to maintain the agricultural community," Chiavetta said. "It's important to maintain that."
Chiavetta said another concern was the proximity of the property in question to a nearby railroad, which raised the possibility of the developer moving solid waste into the area by rail.
Friends and Neighhors Against the Landfill, a
group of residents opposed the plan, had a
number of meetings planned to air their concerns about the project,
including one today at 7 p.m. in the Evans Rod & Gun Club on Cain
Road in Angola. That strategy session is now planned as a celebration of the
board's vote.
