BRANT - A petition with 755 signatures to show support to the Brant Town Board for its previous decision to not open the landfill issue once again has been presented to the board.

Spokesperson Betty O'Donnell of "Friends and Neighbors Against the Brant Garbage Landfill" Tuesday presented board members with with the signatures - collected in a three-week period.

In a letter addressed to board members from the group on Dec. 6, thanks were expressed for looking at the detrimental and environmental effects on the people who would he living in close range of the site, as well as the whole area.

"Our committee felt we had to do some-thing to support the board and (its) decision to stick with this law, and not reopen this issue," O'Donnell said. "What we did was start a house-to- house petition drive in the town of Brant... and in three weeks we gathered 755 signatures against the Brant landfill."

O'Donnell felt it was necessary for the committee to show support for the board because of previous antagonism and threats made by opponents of the proposed garbage landfill at the November board meeting.

An evaluation committee established in August to discuss the landfill was dissolved at the September board meeting because Brant has a town law prohibiting landfills. A resolution was passed by board members to not proceed with the proposal.

At the November board meeting many residents approached the board questioning its members why they had dissolved the committee without residents' input. Those residents were then encouraged to direct their questions in letters and phone calls to the board members because it was not an agenda item at the November meeting.

The committee against the landfill then collected petition signatures in support of not having the issue brought up once again.

No further action was taken by the board concerning the matter, no public comments were made by the standing room only crowd, and the petitions were accepted by the Brant board members.

Residents with further questions are encouraged further to contact Supervisor Sam Chiavetta Jr. or Councilwoman Ellen Bowman.

The next board meeting will be Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. in the Brant Town Hall.
